Unconditioned Stimulus in Classical Conditioning

Unconditioned Stimulus in Classical Conditioning Theories Behavioral Psychology Print Unconditioned Stimulus in Classical Conditioning By Kendra Cherry facebook twitter Kendra Cherry, MS, is an author, educational consultant, and speaker focused on helping students learn about psychology. For example, when you smell one of your favorite foods, you may immediately feel hungry. In this example, the smell of the food is the unconditioned stimulus. Examples of the Unconditioned Stimulus In Ivan Pavlovs classic experiment with dogs, the smell of food was the unconditioned stimulus. The dogs in his experiment would smell the food, and then naturally begin to salivate in response. This response requires no learning, and it simply happens automatically. Some more examples of the unconditioned stimulus include: A feather tickling your nose causes you to sneeze. The feather tickling your nose is the unconditioned stimulus.Cutting up an onion makes your eyes water. The onion is the unconditioned stimulus.Pollen from grass and flowers cause you to sneeze. The pollen is the unconditioned stimulus.Your cat running to its bowl whenever it smells food. The scent of food is the unconditioned stimulus.A loud bang causes you to flinch away from the sound. The unexpected loud noise is the unconditioned stimulus because it automatically triggers a response with no prior learning. In each of these examples, the unconditioned stimulus naturally triggers an unconditioned response or reflex. You dont have to learn to respond to the unconditioned stimulus - it simply occurs automatically. The Role of the Neutral Stimulus For the purposes of classical conditioning or learning, you cant have an unconditioned stimulus without a neutral stimulus. In other words, for conditioning to take place, you must first start by pairing a previously neutral stimulus with an unconditioned stimulus. A neutral stimulus doesnt trigger any particular response at first, but when used together with an unconditioned stimulus, it can effectively stimulate learning. A good example of a neutral stimulus is a sound or a song. When it is initially presented, the neutral stimulus has no effect on behavior. As it is repeatedly paired with an unconditioned stimulus, it will begin to cause the same response as the UCS. For example, the sound of a squeaky door opening may initially be a neutral stimulus. If that sound is repeatedly paired with an unconditioned stimulus, such as you feeding your cat, that sound will eventually come to trigger a change in your cats behavior. Once an association has been formed, you cat may react as if it is being fed every time it hears the squeaky door open. How Timing Impacts Acquisition or Learning of a Behavior Throughout the classical conditioning process, there are a number of different factors that can influence how quickly associations are learned. How much time that passes between presenting the initially neutral stimulus and the unconditioned stimulus is one of the most important factors in whether or not learning will actually occur. The timing of how the neutral stimulus and the unconditioned stimulus are presented is what influences whether or not an association will be formed, a principle that is known as the congruity hypothesis. How the UCS Works in Classical Conditioning In Ivan Pavlovs famous experiment, for example, the tone of the bell was initially a neutral stimulus while the smell of food was the unconditioned stimulus. Presenting the tone close to presenting the smell of food results in a stronger association. Ringing the bell, the neutral stimulus, long before the unconditioned stimulus leads to a much weaker or even nonexistent association. Different types of conditioning may use different timing or order between the neutral stimulus and the UCS. In simultaneous conditioning, the neutral stimulus is presented at the exact time as the unconditioned stimulus. This type of conditioning leads to weak learning. In backward conditioning, the unconditioned stimulus is given first and the neutral stimulus is presented afterward. This type of conditioning also tends to result in weak learning. In trace conditioning, the neutral stimulus is presented briefly and then stopped, then the unconditioned stimulus is presented. This type of conditioning produces good results. In delayed conditioning, the neutral stimulus is presented and continues while the unconditioned stimulus is offered. This type of conditioned produces the best results. How New Behaviors Are Acquired by Using Acquisition

Argumentative Essay Topics About Professional Athlete Salaries

Argumentative Essay Topics About Professional Athlete SalariesArgumentative essay topics about professional athlete salaries are a great way to improve your writing skills. You can't just talk about what's going on in the world, but you need to know what's going on in the world to have an intelligent response to the question at hand. Arguing that athletes get paid too much is a sure way to annoy or drive off the audience and they won't pay any attention to what you have to say.In this article I will give you an important note: there is no reason to argue that athletes don't get paid enough. They do, as you will see in a second. The point is that the problem is not in the fact that professional athletes make more than other people in general. The problem is that professional athletes are considered a privilege and an exception because of their talents. What argumentative essay topics about professional athlete salaries should include is the fact that the general public should be paying for these players' salaries. You might as well consider this when you argue that athletes are paid too much. Even if you think that players' salaries are too high, it doesn't mean that everyone should be paying their bills. The public should be expected to pay for such players and it doesn't make sense to argue that this shouldn't be done.Argumentative essay topics about professional athlete salaries should focus on the fact that the public should be paying for them. Remember that the public also pays for the federal government. They pay for police officers, firefighters, teachers, etc. It doesn't make sense to say that you are against people paying for these professional players' salaries when it is their own government that provides the money for them.Another point to make in argumentative essay topics about professional athlete salaries is that athletes are not compensated by the public. As a matter of fact, many athletes believe that they receive compensation from the public, b ut in reality they are not really compensated. The fact that they are making an enormous amount of money and getting special treatment means that they are paid more than the average person, but the public is not paying them.Argumentative essay topics about professional athlete salaries are great ways to learn how to improve your ability to articulate your ideas. The biggest mistake that you can make is to show that you're the one that is getting the better of the other person. Of course the other person has a valid point, and this makes him right. The other person should be able to make his own arguments and you should be able to respond to them. You have to be willing to defend your own intellectual integrity, and you should be willing to be as well-written as possible. The other person should have similar points as you, and you should be able to respond to those points. If the other person is just making a bunch of empty claims, you should be able to show why that makes no sense.Ar gumentative essay topics about professional athlete salaries are a great way to teach yourself to use your argumentative abilities. You have to remember that there is no point in arguing that professional athletes get paid too much. The fact that you think that means that you are looking for a way to get out of making a very good argument.

Claude Monet Painting Essay by Simone and Pierro Auguste Ringuet

Claude Monet Painting Essay by Simone and Pierro Auguste RinguetIn this article I'm going to provide you with my two cents about a Claude Monet Painting essay by Simone and Pierro Auguste Ringuet entitled 'Soli Nuntiati: Ornament and Descent'. I hope you enjoy this research into a different style of painting from a well-known painter. The painting is a semplice ornate painting depicting two fish leaping out of a lake, which they appear to land in. It is one of the most commonly used versions of the water scene that Monet was known for creating and is also one of the most widely admired paintings ever created by Monet. However the painting does have a somewhat jarring lack of symmetry, and also lacks a pattern, as semplice ornamentation is not shown. But despite its imperfections, the painting is still very much a Monet masterpiece. In fact, this painting was used by Monet for the majority of his life, and one can even say that it is his signature work.As for how this semplice ornate pa inting got into the Ringuet's hands, the most likely explanation is that Monet had been asked to paint it, and then the artist simply presented it to them in a private collection. Monet left this masterpiece in their possession when he died, and shortly after the Ringuets' wedding they decided to present it to their children as a gift. The painting has been on display in the Ringuet's home ever since, and it still remains on view today. It also recently received a retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and was part of the show titled 'Dating Monet: Studies in Style and Form' that included other Monet works, including 'Bathers of the River Sessuecca', 'Emilie', and 'Fountain of Youth'.Both of these paintings are also greatly influenced by monochromatic or semplice ornamentation. The importance of this painting in Monet's oeuvre does not just lie in its similarity to monochromatic works such as 'The Kiss', 'The Sea & Trees', 'Mimosa', 'Bathers of the River Sessuecca', and 'La Japonaise', but also because it shows the artist's desire to mix and match the different styles that were to become his signature. In addition to the use of monochromatic and semplice ornamentation, there is also evidence that Monet was more open to experimenting with color and design than most of his contemporaries. Most people would agree that the moody colors used in his more popular paintings such as 'Disorderly Composition'Summertime with Flowers' are heavily influenced by the Cubist movement, and Monet himself admitted to using those colors in 'Crescent Lake (Flower).'Semplice ornamentation, also called sempimenti, were a very important part of Monet's style, and he is responsible for many masterpieces that are still highly sought after by art lovers and collectors. I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.
